GovernGoofed

If validators are the beating heart of Polkadot, governance is the brain that keeps it healthy.

Proposal

This proposal is to research the scope of a project called GovernGoofed and attract contributors. GovernGoofed wants to offer a solution to 3 of the most challenging aspects of OpenGov1: participation, rewards, education.

The requested amount for this proposal is symbolic.

This proposal has 3 goals:

  • Explain the scope of the GovernGoofed project.
  • Research the cost and ideal approach.
  • Attract contributors for the project.

Proposer

OkAlice, is a young dev agency that works and builds exclusively in the Polkadot ecosystem since mid 2022. Two out of four of our core team members will be enrolling in the next PBA in Berkeley next week. @snow_mead , @DagieDee

One core team member works at parity and has an advisory roll: @kodeist

What is GovernGoofed?

Problem

  • There’s a lack of participation in the governance and treasury proposals in the Dotsama ecosystem.
  • There’s no real incentive for Dot holders to vote on proposals
  • There’s often little knowledge about proposals

Solution

  • Make the act of voting more visible and cool.
  • Incentivise voting with non-financial rewards, so people vote for the right reason.
  • Create a tool/community that explains the most important proposals in a non-technical way

How?

The GovernGoofed solution consists out of 3 parts

PART 1: Making participation in voting visible and cool.

Part one of GovernGoofed is a Dapp where people can upload their favourite pfp. The Dapp is a goofmachine that then changes/goofes the pfp according to the amount of votes a user made. By this it leverages the existing NFT communities inside the Polkadot ecosystem to visualise the participation of their members in the Polkadot governance.

How?

Voters can upload their favourite pfp to a Dapp.
The Dapp tracks and takes in to account the amount of votes and according to the votes it goofes -> changes the pfp. I.e. 10 votes ‘goofes’ the pfp slightly, 50 votes changes it more, 100 votes ‘goofes’ the pfp drastically.
The pfp’s are interpreted and changed by a trained AI. The AI uses re-occuring features that are recognizable in other goofed NFT’s.

PART 2: Incentivising voting

Each goofed NFT holders participates automatically in a raffle. The winners of the raffle are rewarded with benefits such as:

  • Being invited to a Polkadot Decoded event, flight & hotel costs are covered by the GovernGoofed treasury.
  • The winners can spend x amount of DOT supporting a Dotsama project such as Teddie Dao or any other project.
  • Other options to be explored

So in essence the benefits by voting will be real, but they increase the participation of the voters in the ecosystem rather than voters being financially rewarded.

PART 3: Educational

GovernGoofed is a media platform that educates about the current running proposals by giving a stage to proposers and voters.
It uses known channels such as YT, Twitter, Discord etc. to give a voice to proposers in order to give insight in their proposal.

A full visual presentation of the project can be found here.

Can you provide more info on the symbolic aspect? If passed what expectation does it set?

Hey Paradox,
Thanks a lot for your interest and comment!

The amount of 250 DOT is rather symbolic. We submitted this proposal primarily to raise awareness about the project and hopefully attract people who can assist us. We won't use the money to pay ourselves, but it could come in handy if we incur any costs for third parties involved in the research.

Here's some additional information about the research part:
The project has a broad scope consisting of four parts:

  1. Researching the development of the Dapp:
This aspect is well covered since we won a hackathon last year with a project called RoosterDao. The main concept behind RoosterDao was to build a logic around an NFT that evolves based on the participation of members in a Dao. We can leverage that experience for part of the Dapp research.
  2. Researching the development of the AI tool responsible for "goofing" the NFTs:
This is an entirely new endeavor. The challenge will be to establish consistency in how each unique NFT evolves, ensuring they all have recognizable traits as "GovernGoofed" NFTs.
  3. Researching the formats for the media coverages of the OpenGov proposals: We would aim for a certain high quality like the Kusamarians are achieving. We hope to have them onboard as advisors or as collaborators.
  4. Researching the raffle logic and possible rewards. We would like to learn from The Royal Raffle and would love to team up with projects like Teddy Dao.

I hope this clarifies the different aspects of our research project. Let me know if you have any further questions or need more information!

Best!
Dagmar
